The potential return of wild wolves to Colorado is a contentious issue. Organizations like the Rocky Mountain Wolf project are making a renewed push for a state ballot measure to approve reintroduction of the gray wolf to Colorado’s mountainous open lands, reigniting century-old debates over stewardship and species protection. John Ramer represents some of the lesser-heard voices in this debate, working on the front lines of conservation and dealing with the consequences of humans’ complicated and conflicted relationship with wolves.
Ramer has worked in animal sanctuaries most of his adult life, often without pay, and feels this is his life’s calling. His experiences working with captive wolves have left him deeply changed, driving him to share his knowledge and passion with others in the hope that wild wolves might one day return to Colorado’s open lands. Filmed entirely at the non-profit Mission:Wolf sanctuary in the Wet Mountains of southern Colorado, Wolf Call asks us to rethink our relationship to wild and captive animals, as well as the world we together inhabit.
